Assists the pathologists in the gross examination of tissues, cuts, mounts and stains tissue slides for microscopic examination. Documents records for QA/QC purposes, checking functions and/or temperature of equipment and ordering of supplies.
Knowledge of biology, chemistry and math acquired through one year’s related course work or a certified histotechnician program.
Hand-eye coordination sufficient to perform technical duties described. Color discrimination sufficient to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes.
Analytical skills sufficient to gather, organize, evaluate and integrate information for the purpose of determining a course of action.
Knowledge of histochemical reagents, solutions and equipment operation and maintenance.
Work is generally performed in a laboratory environment in which there is risk of exposure to unpleasant and/or potentially hazardous chemicals and biohazards.
Physical exposure to cold chamber used in frozen section procedure and sharp blades used in cryostat and microtome.
Work may be stressful due to production and high degree of accuracy demands.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Ensures patient/specimen identification at all times.
Receives and prepares tissue specimens for gross examination. Assists pathologist in gross examination and photography procedures.
Performs a variety of clerical duties such as billing, accessioning, labeling and data entry, for the purpose of preparing specimens for further processing.
Processes, embeds, cuts and mounts tissue samples to assure quality slides for microscopic evaluation.
Prepares unfixed tissues for rapid diagnosis through freezing chamber (cryostat); stains and coverslips this tissue.
Prepares chemical reagents and solutions for staining procedures.
Performs routine histochemical and immune histochemical staining of tissues for interpretation by a pathologist. Properly identifies microscopic tissue structures and staining characteristics during and after staining procedures in order to guarantee properly stained slides.
Checks function and/or temperature and maintains/cleans equipment according to procedure manual to assure properly functioning equipment.
Files and maintains slide and tissue block archives in order to assure immediate retrieval of slides or blocks when necessary.
Prepares cytology specimens.
Refers patient identification discrepancies, unusual situations or specimens to Pathologist or Supervisor for clarification.
Utilizes continuing education to keep current in histological procedures and technology.
Demonstrates behaviors consistent with stated core values of Mercy Health Partners.
